Family Law includes: Divorce, child custody, child support, visitation or parenting time, domestic violence or abuse, protective orders, grandparent visitation and juvenile proceedings. It is an area of practice which is rapidly and constantly changing.
Many counties utilize a Family Court in which any of the areas falling under the general term of Family Law are handled by the same judge, often in the same proceeding. Other counties do not have a Family Court. This means family related issues might be handled in different courts by different judges at different times.
Some may find it to their advantage to avoid having to appear in court altogether and engage in Mediation. Sometimes referred to as “amicable divorce”, Mediation is a process in which the parties agree to resolve their issues before an independent third party, often a retired judge or experienced attorney.
